Group classes, with a fun friendly atmosphere. Everyone is welcome!
Social distancing guidelines are in place for your safety!
This class is ideally suited for people who have some chronic medical conditions (like hypertension, diabetes), prefer low impact movements or simply would like to begin exercising but do not know how to start. Most participants are over 50 years young, however, age is just a number. Each exercise has options to accommodate different abilities and skills. Each session includes strength, balance, coordination and cardiovascular elements. Varied exercises and a friendly atmosphere will help you to stay active for longer.
The class is designed to improve postural stability, strengthen hips and legs to help prevent falls. The exercises follow OTAGO program principles and use ankle weights at each session. There is a chair support available for those who need it. The class is suitable for an independent older adult who is at risk of falls. There is a maximum of 10 people in the class, and we still follow social distancing guidelines for safety.
Regular exercises are the best way to improve your wellbeing, especially if you have been diagnosed with MS. The exercises are focused on improving/maintaining good postural stability, as well as static and dynamic balance. Keeping symmetrical alignments helps with completion of everyday tasks and allows more confident participation in other favourite activities. To join the class you will need a referral from your medical professional and initial assessment.
The following services are offered on a 1-2-1 basis and / or can be personalised and embedded into the existing classes above.
A plan will be developed to suit your needs and availability. Prices are available on request.
Personal Training is perfect for anybody from a beginner to advanced level. It gives you a freedom to train when it suits you best. It could be outdoor, in your home or in my small studio. Sessions are planned in advance.
Each session consists of cardiovascular, strength and flexibility elements in varied proportions depending on your needs, wants and personal goals. Sessions are arranged on a weekly basis or you can have a permanent slot (if available).
To improve your overall wellbeing and help avoid a fall, Balance and Coordination skills need to be frequently practiced but they are often taken for granted or overlooked.
Improved Balance and Coordination will give you more confidence to move around your home and outside especially with the challenge of walking on an uneven surface or in a straight line with feet close together.
To make sessions more fun and personalised to your needs: static and dynamic balance exercises are included in all sessions in various forms.
A regular exercise routine is vital for anybody diagnosed with a long-term neurological condition. Being active and exercising helps to slow down the loss of function. As a result it preserves current ability for longer.
If you have had Hip or knee replacement surgery it is important to participate in a post rehabilitation exercise program which can accommodate and adapt to your personal needs.
Post Rehabilitation Exercise can improve:
Staying active improves the health and density of their bones which results in improved fixation of the joint and decreases the probability of early loosening.
"I have been coming to The Active Body Studio exercise classes for over 3 years now (which is saying something, as I have never before stuck with an exercise routine).I would like to say Ela is such an amazing instructor making sure I do the moves properly hence no more sore neck, knees and back. She motivates me to work that much harder. Her classes are so much fun, much better than any gym. I always look forward to them and feel great afterwards too. Thank you Ela"
I'm writing this to publicly thank Ela Burningham and The Active Body Studio for helping me achieve what I thought was an impossible goal. 9 weeks ago I asked Ela for help after struggling to lose weight for over a year. After a week of doing a food diary, she put me on an 8 week plan which has resulted in me losing 10 kilos ( that's just over 1.5 stone, folks!) and believe it or not, it's been easy! Ela is the most amazing and encouraging motivator, a fabulous Piyo and fitness instructor and a great friend. I can't thank her enough. Finally, this isn't meant to be self congratulatory in the slightest, but rather, I hope, inspirational to those who might be fighting the flab like me. If I can do it, anyone can! Trust me - my will power is microscopic!“
Ela is a hidden gem I almost don't want to tell you about! I never thought it would be possible for someone like me to get fit but Ela's fantastic knowledge, expertise and care is helping me get there safely. Don't let a lack of confidence or fear of exercise hold you back. Ela's friendly support and motivation will help guide you to a stronger, fitter you - but dont't expect it to be easy.
